April 7,8,9: Santa Rosa Boat and Recreation Show
When: Sat. thru Mon.Where: Santa Rosa Fairgrounds.

This is NOT a flying event. Sonoma Wings will be maning an exhibit at the Recreation show, extolling the virtues of Hang Gliding to one and all. This event is on the calendar so that you'll know to come over and help out. Contact Charley Warren to let him know you'd like to help.

April 15 - 21: Flytec Championships
When: Sun., 4/15 thru Sat., 4/21/2001.Where: Quest Air Flight Park, Groveland Florida.
Cost: Entry fee is $250. After 4/1, $299. Fill out a registration form and send it in ASAP.

$10,000 in prize money. Full USHGA and CIVL sactioning. If you're chasing WRPS points, you'll need to have an FAI sporting license. You must have your aerotow signoff.

May 5: Cinco de Mayo

This Cinco de Mayo party has become an annual event. This is our third year now. It started as our way of saying Thank You to the owners of the properties we land on, and that is still its main purpose. It is also a great first-event-of-the-season to get our collective flying juices flowing.

May 19 - 20: Coyote Howl, Coulterville
When: Sat, Sun..Where: Lake McClure, near Coulterville, in Gold Country.

Coulterville puts on a Coyote Howl every year, with a howling contest, flea market, arts & crafts, music, gunfighter skits, horseshoe tournament AND a HG fly-in.
The Coyote Howl events take place on Saturday from 9AM - 5PM in Coulterville. The Hang Gliding takes place both Sat. & Sun. at the lake, about 10 minutes from town.

June 22 - 24: Region 2 Regionals
When: Fri, Sat, Sun.Where: Carson City, Nevada.
Cost: $100. After 5/30, $125. Fill out a registration form and send it in ASAP.

The contest will be open to any qualified pilot from any region or country. The tasks will be called each day and they will consist of a timed race to goal. The winner of each day will receive 2000 points. The other pilots will receive percentages of 2000 points based on their relative times for each day.
Contestants will receive a T-shirt and admission to the Saturday Night Dinner and party. Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers at an awards party Sunday. Pilots will meet each morning at 9:00AM at Washoe State Park.

"We are asking that you respond quickly. We will make up our list of pilots who will be invited to fly at Zapata from the list of pilots who respond to this notice. All responses must be by e-mail. Those pilots who respond earlier have a greater chance of being invited.
Our criteria for pilots who will be invited are as follows:
Pilots who play well with others.
Those who present to the world a pleasant countenance.
No discrimination against any glider manufacturer.
World class pilots will be sought out, but pilots of local renown will also be invited"

July 6 - 8: King Mt. meet
When: The meet is Fri, Sat, Sun. Several SW'ers will be leaving on various days, up to a week before, to get in some flying before the meet. Most folks will be returning Mon. after the meet.Where: Moore, Idaho, near Arco.
Cost: $50 to enter the competition: ($25 to join the club (for insurance) and $25 for the T-shirt and other goodies). Saturday night BBQ ($10) & Team competition ($5) are extra.

Last year the King meet was dynamite! We can expect a big SW showing this year (last year: 8 pilots + drivers). Be sure to plan on going!
King Mt. is 14 hrs (800 miles) away.
To be safe, you'll want to bring oxygen.ĀĀ Valley floor is 5K, Mt. tops are 11K, heights to 18K are common, as are distances to 100mi. & beyond!

August 11 - 18: HG Nationals, Hearne Texas
When: Sat. Aug. 11 - Sat. Aug. 18Where: Austin Air Sports - Hearne, Texas.
Cost: $250 until July 11, then $300. Aero tow fee: $150. Fill out the on-line registration at the link below.

This is a fully sanctioned USHGA Class A (NTSS) and FAI/CIVL Category 2 (WPRS) meet. It will be an aero tow meet, open to 75 pilots, with tasks to be 60+ mile triangles, 90+ mile multi-leg tasks, and 100+ mile races to goal.
The organizers will be using the new GPS software, which allows cylindrical start gates and turnpoints, and the latest version of Race.
All competing pilots must be a minimum of Intermediate (H3) rating with a XC, TURB, and AT (aero tow) sign-off. Pilots will not be allowed to compete without proof of these ratings or the equivalent.
This is not a Club trip, but several club members are going.
Rich Sauer went last year and did well. If you're thinking of going, he and Linda can fill you in on all the details.
Hearne is is over 2 days away (1975 miles).

When: Sat. & Sun. Some pilots will go up Thur. night so they can fly on Friday.Where: Stony Ford, CA. , near Maxwell on I5.

This is the Club's official home-site competition event. Stony Ford is 3 hrs away from Santa Rosa.

Owens Valley Weekends

Several club pilots will be trying to get down to the Owens on weekend trips all summer long. If you want to go, either join up with someone on a scheduled weekend, or schedule a weekend yourself. Just let Ernie Camacho know and he'll update this calendar.
The Owens is 9 hrs away. Peter Lawrence, for one, likes to leave his home in San Jose Friday around noon, getting to Lone Pine 7 hrs. later. He flys Sat. & Sun., then drives back home, getting in around 2AM or so, depending on how far he flew.
Overnight accomodations are either Motel-ing in Big Pine, or camping at Tuttle Creek campground, on the way up to launch.
