Hang gliding costs a few hundred dollars to try and several thousand to take up. In October 2026, published US prices put a tandem flight at roughly $200 to $350, training to a Novice rating at roughly $1,200 to $4,400, and a first set of gear at a few thousand dollars used or $7,000 and up new. The figures below come from school, dealer and USHPA price pages we checked in October 2026. Prices vary by region and change often, so treat them as a starting range and confirm with the school before you book.
Cost of a tandem flight
A tandem flight with a certified instructor is the cheapest way to find out if flying is for you. Published prices we found:
- Kitty Hawk Kites (North Carolina): tandem aerotow hang gliding from $199, plus a 6% online fee; a beginner dune lesson from $149 (Kitty Hawk Kites).
- Windsports (Los Angeles): mountain tandem hang gliding flight from Kagel Mountain, $350 including GoPro footage (Windsports). If you would rather start low, its beach lessons on a 30-foot dune cost $115 for 4 flights or $175 for 7 (Windsports beach).
- Torrey Pines Gliderport (San Diego): tandem paragliding $200 to $275 depending on the day and media add-ons. The school lists hang gliding tandems at $225 but currently says it is not offering them because it has no tandem hang gliding instructor (Torrey Pines).
Photo and video packages usually cost extra, and tandems depend on the weather, so be ready to reschedule.
Cost of lessons to your first solo rating
The real start-up cost is training to the Novice rating (H2 for hang gliding, P2 for paragliding), the level at which you can fly without an instructor at suitable sites. Our learning to fly guide explains what that training involves.
Hang gliding to H2
- Lookout Mountain Flight Park (Georgia): $1,199 for its Eagle package (ground school, 50 training hill flights, 3 instructional tandems, mountain launch and parachute clinics, 4 supervised mountain launches), or $2,299 for the VIP package with 75 hill flights and 12 tandems (Lookout Mountain).
- Windsports (Los Angeles): $800 for the New Pilot package of 5 beach lessons toward H1. The school says students typically reach H2 after about 5 more advanced beach lessons ($155 each), 5 mountain tandems ($275 each) and 8 mountain solo flights ($175 each) (Windsports). Added up, that typical path comes to about $4,350.
So a realistic H2 budget runs from roughly $1,200 to $4,400 in tuition, before travel and lodging.
Paragliding to P2
- Torrey Pines Gliderport (San Diego): P1 $1,700 and P2 $2,100 separately; a P1+P2 combo for $2,800 if you buy your gear through the Gliderport shop, or $3,800 without the gear purchase (Torrey Pines).
- Eagle Paragliding (Santa Barbara): $1,950 for its P2 program when you buy a basic equipment package from the school, or $395 per day with your own gear, with a 7-day minimum and 10-day maximum billed (Eagle Paragliding).
Watch how packages are structured. A low tuition price that requires buying gear from the school is not directly comparable to a higher price with no purchase required.
USHPA membership and rating fees
Every student and pilot needs USHPA membership. Current USHPA prices (October 2026): $6 for a 10-day temporary membership (common for tandem passengers), $50 for a 60-day student membership, and $199 a year for a full Pilot membership (USHPA). Registering each new rating costs a one-time $15 (USHPA FAQ). Our USHPA ratings guide explains what the membership covers.
Gear: new vs used
Paragliding gear
A basic paragliding setup is a wing, harness, reserve parachute, helmet, radio, hook knife and leg stirrup, according to Eagle Paragliding’s equipment list (Eagle). Price points we found:
- Eagle Paragliding says used packages start around $4,500 and new packages average $7,300 (Eagle).
- 406 Paragliding (Montana) lists a new mountain beginner package at $7,185 retail: a low-B wing ($4,800), open harness ($1,050), reserve ($950), rucksack ($180) and helmet ($205). The school notes these prices include tariffs as of December 2025 (406 Paragliding).
- Torrey Pines Gliderport’s shop lists new beginner-level wings such as the BGD Magic 2 (EN-A) at $3,500 and the BGD Base 3 at $4,400, and reserves at $950 to $1,200 (Torrey Pines shop).
Instruments are optional at first. 406 Paragliding puts a variometer at $250 to $1,000 and a radio at $50 to $300.
Hang gliding gear
Hang gliders are often bought used, and fall 2026 listings show a wide range:
- Wingseller listings in August to October 2026 ranged from $800 (an older glider sold with harness) to about $5,400, with common beginner-to-intermediate Wills Wing Falcons listed at $1,200 to $3,200 (Wingseller).
- Windsports listed pre-owned Falcon gliders from $1,250 to $3,500 (Windsports gear).
- New: Windsports listed a brand-new Moyes Malibu 2 188 at $6,800 plus tax (Windsports).
You also need a harness, reserve parachute, helmet and radio, plus a roof rack to carry the glider. We did not find a current published harness price we could verify, so ask a dealer for a quote. Have any used glider inspected by an instructor or dealer before you fly it, and make sure it suits your weight and rating. Our dealers and training page lists shops and manufacturers.
Site fees
Many sites charge nothing beyond club membership. Others charge day fees. Torrey Pines Gliderport, for example, charges visiting pilots $10 a day or $200 for an annual pass, and $250 a day for supervised instruction for P2 and H3 pilots (Torrey Pines). Our sites in Sonoma County are covered by Sonoma Wings dues, which are $25 a calendar year (how to join), and some have extra rules about sponsors and ratings; see our site guides. For other California sites, check each guide in our California flying sites directory.
Ongoing yearly costs
Once you own gear and hold a rating, typical recurring costs are:
- USHPA Pilot membership: $199 a year.
- Club dues: $25 a year for Sonoma Wings; other clubs set their own.
- Reserve parachute repacks and periodic wing inspections. Intervals and prices vary by manufacturer and shop, so ask yours.
- Gear replacement over time. Paraglider fabric degrades with UV exposure (Paragliding San Francisco), so a wing has a limited life.
- Travel: gas, shuttles to launch, and trips to other sites.
- Continuing education: clinics for thermalling, ridge soaring, towing or reserve deployment.
Two sample first-year budgets
Using only the prices above, here is roughly what a first year could cost. Your numbers will differ.
A paraglider pilot who trains at Eagle Paragliding and buys a used package there would pay about $1,950 in tuition, about $4,500 for gear, $50 for a student membership, $15 to register the rating and $199 for the first year of Pilot membership: roughly $6,700 in total.
A hang glider pilot who follows Lookout Mountain’s $1,199 Eagle package, then buys a used Falcon for around $2,500, would spend about $3,700 before adding a harness, reserve, helmet, radio, USHPA dues and travel, none of which are small.
How to keep the cost down
Take one tandem before you commit to a full program. Buy gear only after an instructor helps you choose the right size and certification level. Buy used through your school or a club where someone can vouch for the gear’s history. And join a local club early, because flying with experienced pilots is the cheapest continuing education there is. If cost is part of a broader worry, our page on whether hang gliding is safe covers why spending on training and a reserve is money well spent.
